Most Popular Cocktails – Part 1

A cocktail is a generic term used to mean an alcoholic mixed drink. It may consist of a number of different ingredients but one of them must be alcohol. Cocktails are a huge hit with party animals and also among soft-core drinkers who don’t mind a sip or two at times! Since it contains a low alcohol content, it is more agreeable to people who do not have much fervor for alcohol. However, on the contrary, some hard-core drinkers at times prefer cocktails too!

Martini P.C.: http://goo.gl/HPbYNM

P.C.: http://goo.gl/HPbYNM

One of the most common names is Martini, to begin with. A traditional Martini cocktail is made with a mix of gin and vermouth (a kind of wine flavoured with various botanicals). It has a kind of tangy kick to it since it is served with olives and a twist of lemon! There is a special Martini glass in which this is served usually.

Here is a recipe of a Vodka Martini for you:

3 fluid ounces of Vodka, 1 fluid ounce of dry vermouth, 1 cup of crushed ice, 1 lemon wedge and 3 olives for garnish. Mix the Vodka, vermouth and ice is a cocktail shaker and pour into a glass. Squeeze a little of the lemon juice from the wedge and drop into the glass. In a thin stick, pierce the three olives and put into the glass. Serve chilled!

Mojito Cocktail

Mojito Cocktail

The second most common name is a Mojito. A Mojito originated from the Cuban highball that traditionally contains five main ingredients – rum (white), sparkling water, sugar, lime juice and mint (leaves and sprigs). It is a very refreshing drink and holds a high appeal on the beach shacks and tropical countries.

Here is a Classic Mojito recipe for you:

Mix together 2 teaspoons of sugar, 6-8 mint leaves, Club Soda (sparkling water), juice of half a lemon, 2 fluid ounces of a light rum (usually white or silver in colour, very subtle in taste and with a hint of sweetness), 1 cup crushed ice in a cocktail shaker. Pour into a mojito glass and garnish with a wedge of lime and a mint sprig. Serve chilled!

Margarita P.C.: http://goo.gl/atmhPy

P.C.: http://goo.gl/atmhPy

The third most well known cocktail is Margarita. A Matgarita is made with four main ingredients – tequilla, tripe sec (orange flavoured liqueur like Cointreau and Combier), lemon juice, and salt on the rim of the glass. The perfect information on the origin or the inventor of Margarita is unknown but is generally accepted to have its roots in Mexico.

Here is a Simple Margarita Cocktail recipe for you:

Into a cocktail shaker, add 1.5 fluid ounces of Tequilla, 0.5 fluid ounce of Triple Sec (Cointreau is recommended), 1 fluid ounce of fresh lime juice, 1 cup of crushed ice and mix hard. Rub a wedge of lime aling the rim of the glass and then dip it into a salty or sweet rimming salt or plain salt or powdered sugar. Pour in the cocktail mix and add lemon wedges for garnish.

A Gourmet Dish
P.C. : http://goo.gl/ldbGHq

In simple language, gourmet food means the highest quality and flavor, prepared well and presented in an artful manner. It is a positive way of describing the refined taste and passion that individuals have over food and drinks. A person who has the knowledge of discriminating taste in the art of cuisine is called a Gourmet person. It is the qualitative talent of the person to demark food as per taste, aroma and style. The capacity to eat more does not make one a gourmet. Gourmets are foodies, of course.
The word gourmet is a French term for a wine broker or taste-vin employed by a wine dealer.
Some examples of Gourmet food can be Blueberry Zuchinni Bread, Caramelized Vidalia Onion Bread Pudding With Fresh Goat Cheese, Minted English Pea Soup, Seared Scallops, Tomato-Chile Jam, Fresh Peas and Bacon, Bacon-Wrapped Parmesan-Stuffed Dates, New England Style Lobster Rolls, Salmon Burgers with Hoisin Barbecue Sauce and Pickled Ginger and Napa Slaw and many many more of course.

So in mood to taste this classy range of food. Here’s Bookyourtable giving ideas about where you can hit to give your buds a luxury of gourmet food in India.

Cake – Did you know?

The term ‘Cake’ has long been in the pages of culinary history and dates back to ancient Egyptian archaeology that talks about the hints of first baking processes to be in use. The Oxford dictionary traces the mention of the English word ‘Cake’ back to the 13th Century.

In those times, cake was nothing like what it is evolved into today. It was a rather plain form of bread, sweetened with honey and often garnished with nuts and dried fruits to add flavour. The word ‘cake’ has been derived from ‘kaka’, belonging to the Norse dialects (Vikings). Medieval English history talks extensively about gingerbreads and fruitcakes. These preparations are known to last for a considerable amount of time.

According to food historians, the development of cake towards how it is found today (round or square ones usually with some icing and decoration) date back to the middle of 17th century. From about the mid-19th century, cake is known as it is known today.

About Spanish Cuisine

Reino de Espana or, officially, the Kingdom of Spain, is one of the most sought after European countries when it comes to the culinary culture. The history of Spain suggests that the present cuisine of Spain is a result of a few centuries of cultural influxes. Ancient Spain or Iberia was the land of primarily three clans – Iberians, Basques and Celts before coming under the dominion of Roman rule. Then followed Germanic rule, North African Moorish Muslim reigns, and gradually, after hundreds of years, the northern Christian kingdoms won back the land of Spain from foreign rulers. Christopher Columbus’s discovery of America also led in some effects in the food and eating scene. Hispania or modern Espana began emerging as one of the pioneers in world power with their diverse political, military, legal and religious reforms. Present day standard of living in Spain is one of the top 10 countries in the world.

The geographical disposition of Spain also adds to the stem of culinary history apart from the political mix of enthnicity and cultures. The large coast line and the northeastern French connection has rendered some influences. Morocco, on the southern tip of the Mediterranean isn’t too far either and thus the gift of olives and its oil came to be key ingredients of Spanish gastronomy.

So many countless cultures, norms and people have passed through or settled in Spain over time. All of this put together along with native Spanish eating habits have conjured the present day Spanish cuisine. The most common Spanish dishes include

1. Croquettes – these are small, deep fried, oval mouthfulls, made with some phenomenal filling like creamy cheese or bechamel and ham and the like.

2. Tortilla Espaniola – this is a classic Spanish potato omelette what is thick and can enwrap some real fillings like ham and bacon.

Gazpacho P.C.: http://goo.gl/B15oP1

3. Gazpacho or Salmorejo – Gazpacho is usually an cold tomato soup but now it has adorned many variants all over the world… There are cold cucumber soup, smoked watermelon soup and more!! Salmorejo is a similar version of cold soup but is made with pureed bread, tomatoes, garlic and vinegar.

4. Pisto – Spanish Ratatouille – this is a vegetarian dish enjoyed as a starter, set as a side with non-veg items. It is usually made with vegetables like tomatoes, capsicums, onions, garlics, zucchini and olive oil.

4. Cured meats – pork is a widely consumed non-veg meat in Spain and amazing preparations like Chorizo (smoked and dried meat sausage), jamon (specially farmed meat slices) and salchichon (meat blended with chosen spices and dried) are found abundantly.

5. Paella –  this is a rice dish that has now travelled all over the world and has quite a few different recipes. But the traditional paella is cooked with meat (usually rabbit or chicken or both), lots of vegetables (bell peppers, beans, etc) and various seafood (prawns, fish, calamari, clams, mussels, etc.). It is usually a ceremonial dish and cooked in latge quantities over slow fire.

6. Fried Milk – among desserts, this is one of the most popular dishes. It is firm, cold milk pudding that is fried and served when hot, with a crust of flour and eggs. Thus it is crispy on the outside and smooth and melting inside. Fried Milk is a sort of Spanish version of a creme brulee.

Red Sangria P.C.: http://goo.gl/1w3MHT

Little Italy in Harbour Park Road, Siripuram, Vishakhapatnam, is our first suggestion for a dining venue. The food is purely vegetarian and yet entraps the essence and taste of true Italian cuisine in every fold of their pasta, every layer of their lasagne or every piece of their pizza! The cheesy bites found here are really enticing and does not have a parallel. This is a chain restaurant that is there in Delhi and other cities as well. The standard and quality of food served is commendable. Little Italy is known for their ‘at-home’ style, comfortable ambiance and the service is good. You will surely enjoy the food here, given the variety of choices even when only vegetarian base is found!

GAD, in The Gateway Hotel on Beach Road, Maharani Peta, Vishakhapatnam, is one of the most apt venues when it comes to your celebrating something special, say, a special occasion like anniversary, birthday or even a date… It is very romantic in its ambiance and has a beautiful view all around. The beach or the poolside, both manage to animate what you see though those large glass windows. You can also sit out in the terrace and enjoy the wild sea wind in your hair while you sip into your drink and munch on the bites! The ambiance is what makes it simply awesome. The food is notable as well. This is a multicuisine venture and thus has impressive choices. Enjoy your dine-out here and feel the difference, revel in the romance!

Amazing Restaurants in Dehradun

Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand and a Union Territory is quite a prominent name in the Indian geographic and economic paraphernalia since it is an important gateway for people travelling to tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, Nainital, Auli, the Hindu holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh and the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit of Char Dham. Located in the Doon valley, it is a rather alluring place with amazing natural beauty of Himalayas and lush greenery, clear sky, rippling brooks and rivers. The Yamuna and Ganges flows on either sides of it! This magnificent Dehradun also has quite a few popular restaurants. Three of them have been enlisted in this BYT blog, as follows:

Noodles at China Bistro P.C.: weekendsxp.com

Noodles at China Bistro
P.C.: weekendsxp.com

China Bistro is quite an established favourite of the people here in Dehradun. It serves authentic Chinese food, without the heavily spiced influences of Indian cuisine and lots of monosodium glutamate (commonly known as ajinomoto)! If you love Oriental food, this is the place you should visit. The ambiance is commendable as the air is a mood-lifting one with the scents of aromatic, delicious food and rambles of happy customers around! Sometimes they arrange bon-fires and sitting out in the open beside a raging wood-fire while sipping into piping soup and yummy dumplings or slupring in tasty noodles and a piece of well-cooked fish/chicken, is definitely heavenly! What do you say?

La Mia Casa P.C.: weekendsxp.com

La Mia Casa
P.C.: weekendsxp.com

Most probably run by an Italian, the Italian restaurant of La Mia Casa is yet another of those amazing little places you must visit if you care for the tastes of authentic Italian food and not the common Indianised versions and you’re in Dehradun. This is a restaurant that has a domestic atmosphere since it is a house that has been modified into a restaurant and thus it has the warmth of home locked in it and the love in its food! Pizzas and pastas are a must have here, not because they are synonymous to Italian food, but because they are really different and very tasty here.

Thin Crust Pizza P.C.: taste.com.au

Thin Crust Pizza
P.C.: taste.com.au

The third one to be mentioned here is The Old Monkeys Cafe, in Pacific Mall, Jakhan, Dehradun. They have booth outdoor and indoor seating and the menu is pretty varied. The atmosphere is apt for those who love to spend time over striking intelligent conversations or reading or unwind with friends but away from loud bangs of a boombox. The restaurant has a pretty pumped up look but fuels on humility!  Thin crust pizzas, burgers and coffee are quite popular among the patrons.
