Shojin Ryori, mostly implies their vegetarian cooking style. It’s the abundant availability of both wild and cultivated vegetables in Japan that led to the emergence of such a culinary style. It started during the 13th century, when Zen Buddhism, a kind of Buddhist practice started in Japan.

Every spread necessarily has a balance of five flavours and colours that completes its composition.  Use of garlic, onion, meat, fish, insects and other pungent flavours is completely abstained in Shojin Ryori.

Shojin Ryori menu is also very much based on nature. Buddhists consider seasonal agricultural products as flow of nature and thus, incorporate them in their plates. During spring, emphasis is led on new sprouts that come up; in summer it’s the green leaves that are preferable; during autumn, it’s more of fruits and nuts while in winter, root veggies and fruits are the main ingredients.

Before the consumption of a Shojin Ryori spread in a Zen Temple, five principles or prayers are chanted which includes:  Reflect on the effort that brings us this food; Reflect on our imperfections as we receive the meal; Reflect on mindfulness to be free from attachment, anger and ignorance; Reflect on taking this food as a medicine to sustain good health and Reflect on the fulfilment of our practice as we accept the offerings.

Taken from the kitchens of Kashmir, this is a mutton broth containing curd, spices, saffron and chunks of meat. The dish tastes delicious when accompanied by Yakhni Pulao. This is rice prepared in the Yakhni broth. Both are very light to consume and mostly white or pale yellowish in color. Many prefer to drink this white broth and then it is called Yakhni Shorba.

Tea Tree Oil
Dip a cotton in tea tree oil and dab on the pimple. Wash the face after 15-20 minutes so that the pimple gets enough of the oil. To make this react fast, you can add little aloe vera gel to the oil. Tea tree oil works in case of other skin disorders like whiteheads and blackheads as well.

Apply white toothpaste before you sleep and in the morning you will see a distinctive difference. This works better if at the same time you follow the ice method. However, remember you have to use white toothpaste and not a gel or salt one.

The remedy you get out of breathing in hot steam is long lasting. That is because steam opens the pore of the pimple and allows the skin to breathe. Post hot steam process, don’t forget to moisturize your skin with oil free solution or cream.

Garlic is antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic and antioxidant  and hence it works good on pimples. To use, cut a clove into pieces. Rub a piece on the pimple and then wash off with luke warm water. To get relief using this method, it’s important to keep repeating it continuously. Eating garlic is another good option though it affects the body bad.

Baking Soda
Baking soda exfoliates the skin by removing excess oil and dirt. To apply the powder, make a paste by adding lemon juice to it. Always remember tow wash this right after, because baking soda unnecesarily dries the skin.

This natural anti biotic also works well on pimples. Apply it direct to the pimple and wash off with luke war water after 30-minutes.
