Momo, the north eastern delicacy is available all across the seven sister state in the roadside stalls to luxurious hotel. The motherland to this filling food is Nepal. Also referred to as dimdums, in India these are found ethnic for the Ladakis and Sikkimese as well.

To let your momo exploration go easy, the BookYourTable team enlists the popular varieties of this dish, which usually we are unaware of:

Steamed Momos:
These are the common and usual variant mostly we know. Well, a plate of hot just made steamed dimsums is definitely a yummilicious healthy affair. Fillings can be seasonal veggies, meat or paneer. Though it’s known to be accompanied with sauce but mint chutney is a nice Indian touch to this foreign dish.

Many finds the white color and boiled factor unattractive. Well, then you must try the fried ones. Momo, with any sort of filling can be fried. They are crispy and crunchy giving it a different taste over the simple ones. To get the complete essence, do try these with mayonnaise or chilli garlic sauce.

 Tandoori Momos:
Definitely, Indians have created and contributed to the momo family. Tandoori dimsums are a delightful try as the scrumptious outing and the warm filling inside together combines to a lip smacking plate. Alike all other, fillings can be anything in this genre and are served with sauces or chutneys.

Wheat Momos:
Experimentation has led to modification in the ingredients of momos. So for the health conscious foodies in the troop, now these are made with wheat. The wheat base make it differ in color and are not completely milk white. But there’s hardly any compromise on the taste.

Soup Momos:
For many one plate of dimsums does not make a complete meal. To solve the issue, experts have introduced the new catgory – Shomey Mothuk or Soup Momo. Many small pieces of momos are dipped in spicy and tangy soup. The soup generally consist a strong veggie base or is simple meat broths. The extra spices and flavors of the soup, in this, take over the subtle taste.

Derived from Tibetan cuisine, these are pan fried ones. With pork, chicken, meat or veggies – any filling these momos contain a portion of sauce or gravy along with it. Fried ginger is a key ingredient in this momo making process.

Cheese Momos:
Various ingredients are included in the momo fillings to offer variety to the food world. Among them one of the most successful attempts was adding cheese to the momos. Irrespective of the kind of filling a good portion of cheese is added in the dumplings. To garish plates, cheese flakes are added to the top of the momo.

Chocolate Momos:
In the attempt to add new flavors, chocolate played its role. Chocolate completely fuses the taste of the salty momos making it a sweet food. Chocolate sauces are added on top to visually attack the hungry tummies.

They have such food magnets in campus that they never feel the need to go out. These joints are popular hangout zones of Delhi but the crowd limits to young generation alone. Either students or alumnus or their friends , mostly this constitute the population of these irresistible Delhi hubs.

When the name has university in it, then who else can be the target other than students? This South Delhi encounter is actually the canteen serving the university students. The reason for their call out across Delhi, is the reasonable pricing and simple ambiance resonating a campus bussle. The menu includes fillers to sumptous meals.A student or not a student, do try this place. While some of you will go back to college or have a feel about how college will be, don’t miss their chicken tangri kabab or chicken tikka.

Inside JNU, the next option you have is North Eastren Dhaba. Well, as the name calls it’s a den for north eastern cuisine that is, Chinese food. The USP of the place is, within JNU campus it’s the only place where one have fruit beer. Along with the beer, platters like chicken-lollipop, cumin and honey-chili, potato are hot cakes. Other factors that contribute to the jossling crowd here is the pocket friendly price along with amzing portions of food.

Ganga Dhaba

The crowd of Ganga Dhaba is not all students in the campus. They are generally an intellectual set of socially and politically active students. However, if you speak to the present or alumni pupils of JNU, you cannot find one who has not been here once or is unaware about it since the last three decades. This signature restaurant shuts at 2a.m. by almost requesting the students to leave. IS not that obvious for a place where the menu starts at Rs.5?

Momo is such a dish that can be found in almost every nook and corner of India and also popular in many countries around the world. The exact origin of this food has not been successful as of now but history mentions its dominant existence is many countries. You too, love them, don’t you?

Momo P.C.: http://goo.gl/BdhsOT

P.C.: http://goo.gl/BdhsOT

The word ‘momo’ stems from a Chinese word momo (馍馍) which refers to ‘steamed bread’. How did ‘momo’ originate in Nepal is uncertain but in the present scenario world-wise, momos are a hot favourite! Usually momos pre prepared by making stuffed pockets of rolled dough and then steamed. Often minced lamb or chicken substitute other preferred meats and serve as the main ingredient of the filling. Finely chopped onions, garlic and ginger, some cilantro and cumin powder add to the taste of the filling. The spicy sauce to go along with it is made with schezwan peppers, tomatoes and some other minor ingredients that bring out the taste. These days, there are vegetarian momos as well, made with paneer, cheeses, and vegetables.

Dumplings / Momo P.C.:http://goo.gl/0qLaaf

P.C.:http://goo.gl/0qLaaf

Momos are mostly done in three ways: steamed (which is the most common and prevalent method), fried (which is also well known but not so popular) and boiled (as put in soups).

This dish is a distinct Tibetan delicacy but now has spread all across India and other countries. There have been a lot of experiments with the recipes and a lot of new versions have come into being. Specially the mountaineous regions eat momos which spreads beyond the geographical boundaries and cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai which are far from the realms of the Himalayas also have numerous momo corners!

Chopsuey

All of us are fond of Chopsuey. Even if we don’t like, we have a fall for the dish.
From where did chopsuey originate?

Vegetable Chopsuey P.C. : http://goo.gl/d6Jmtm

Vegetable Chopsuey
P.C. : http://goo.gl/d6Jmtm

Chopsuey has its roots in many cuisines across the globe – American Chinese cuisine, Filipino cuisine, Canadian Chinese cuisine, German Chinese cuisine, Indian Chinese cuisine, and Polynesian cuisine. It is also a part of Indonesian cuisine where it is referred to as cap cai.
This stir fried dish consists of lots of vegetables such as beans, sprouts, cabbage, celery and meat with a gravy or sauce. The egg poach on the top of it adds décor and taste. It is served with noodles or rice.

American Chopsuey P.C. : http://goo.gl/vpe2qq

American Chopsuey
P.C. : http://goo.gl/vpe2qq

The two characters for chopsuey are pronounced as ‘tsa tsui’ in Chinese and ‘shap sui’ in Cantonese. It means “mixed small bits” or “odds and ends.”This refers to a kind of stew made of many different ingredients mixed  together.
To trace the history of this popular dish, it’s found in 80s, a group of writers or artist called Bohemians (Chinese immigrants in US) gathered in Mott Street to explore this new dish called Chopsuey. Soon thousands of non-Chinese were regularly making the trip to Mott Street  to eat chop suey. By the 1920s, Chopsuey spread across the United States as delicious dish just at a pocket expense of 63 cents.
The end result to this American pick up of a Chinese dish is that, today Chop Suey is of two types – American Chop Suey and Chinese Chop Suey.
The key difference between American Chopsuey  and Chinese Chopsuey is the former is a combination meat, eggs and veggies bound in thick gravy and served along with rice or noodles. Chinese Chopsuey is a pasta  based dish.

Chinese Chopsuey P.C. http://goo.gl/ZGl0vn

Chinese Chopsuey
P.C. http://goo.gl/ZGl0vn

The ingredients of American Chopsuey are elbow macaroni, cooked ground beef, sautéd onions and green peppers in a thick tomato-based sauce. The pasta in American Chop Suey can be varied in nature- ziti, farfalle, or rotelle, in absence of elbow macaroni.
So next time when you order a magnificent platter of chopsuey, decide it over – American or Chinese? Both are  delicious but you should b distinct in the pick.
