Animal vs Plant Protein

Before even beginning to talk about which protein is better suited for the human body, let us re-run the old concepts about Protein, just once more…

Proteins! P.C.: http://goo.gl/hBrgIZ

Proteins!
P.C.: http://goo.gl/hBrgIZ

What is ‘protein’?

The term ‘Protein’ refers to a molecular constitution in the food that we consume that can be broken down to form amino acids. The human body requires about twenty different types of amino acids, out of which only 9 the body is incapable of producing and needs to extract from the food eaten.

Hair to Nails... P.C.: http://goo.gl/1UY3xB

Hair to Nails…
P.C.: http://goo.gl/1UY3xB

But why is ‘protein’ important?

Proteins are the body’s basic building blocks and everything in our body are made up of proteins, right from our hair, skin to our nails. Thus the body requires a basic amount of daily protein intake to meet up the maintainance of the body. But the production of amino acids are require the influence of other elements like vitamins and mineral salts. Together, they pump up our system to function to the best of the physical abilities.

Plant protein - Legumes and Cereals P.C.: http://goo.gl/JUVe3e

Plant protein – Legumes and Cereals
P.C.: http://goo.gl/JUVe3e

Now comes the question on food and how to maintain the intake of protein and which one is better, animal protein (non-vegetarian food) or plant protein (vegan food)?

It is a proven fact that animal protein comes with additions like saturated fat and cholesterol that contribute relentlessly to heart-diseases where as in plants, almost all plants have proteins which come with the gifts of antioxidants, fibers, mineral salts, vitamins and ‘photochemicals’. Needless to say, there are absolutely no side-effects for not consuming animal protein but for every ounce of animal protein you’d eat, there have to be a variety of vegetables to ‘balance’ out the effects!

Foods like lentils, quinoa, buckwheat, kale, peans, beans, all sorts of nuts, soy, chick peas and many such foods are more than sufficient for the human body to thrive and live healthy. Plant protein is known and acknowledged to have almost no side-effects at all!

Yummm! A Chocolate Ganache Cake is the ultimate favourite of all chocolate lovers! This blog will explore what it takes to make it and a little bit about this awesome dessert. Not only a dessert, actually, a Chocolate Ganache Cake is very good for birthdays, anniversaries or any occasions.

Chocolate Ganache P.C.: http://goo.gl/dPYXSL

Chocolate Ganache
P.C.: http://goo.gl/dPYXSL

‘Ganache’ is a French word for a glaze, icing, filling or sauce for any confectionery dishes such as pastries, cakes, croissants and other such food items. Ganache is a generic term and the texture, ingredients and taste of the ganache is modified, changed and reinvented according to the requirements of the dish to be made! Sometimes, ganache may contain liquor or sometimes any liqueur. It may also be made with fruit extracts. Depending on the type of chcoclate used and what the dish demands, the ganache is prepared. It is always the final step of the dish.

A dark chocolate cake with a thick ganache frosting sounds just heart melting, doesn’t it? Well, here’s how you can make it! You’ll need:

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for pans
1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa (spooned and leveled), plus more for pans
2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups packed light-brown sugar
2 large eggs plus 2 large egg yolks, room temperature
6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup low-fat buttermilk

Preheat your oven to 176-180C. Rub butter into two 8-inch round cake pans and dust with cocoa, tapping out the excess. Line each pan at the bottom with a round of parchment/ tracing paper and set aside.

In a bowl, whisk together sifted flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt and keep aside.

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition; beat in chocolate and vanilla. With mixer on low, alternately add flour mixture in three parts and buttermilk in two, beginning and ending with flour mixture.
Divide the batter between prepared pans and smoothen out the tops. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center of a cake comes out clean which can take upto 40-45 minutes. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 15-20mins and with a knife, separate cake from the edge of each pan. Invert cakes onto a wire rack and wait till cooled completely.

Set a rimmed baking sheet upside down on a work surface. Place one cake on sheet, and spread top with 1/3 of ganache. Place second cake on top, and spread remaining ganache over top and sides of cake. Using two wide metal spatulas, carefully transfer frosted cake to a serving platter.

Now for the special ‘dark chocolate ganache’, you’ll need:

2 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 pound bittersweet chocolate, roughly chopped

The procedure is rather simple: In a large saucepan, you need to bring 2 cups heavy cream, 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar, and 1/8 teaspoon salt to a boil. Remove it from heat. Now add 1 pound bittersweet chocolate, roughly chopped, and let the mixture stand, without stirring, for about 1 minute. Whisk just until well combined. Refrigerate, stirring occasionally, until spreadable! Time you’d require for the whole this will be about 1 hour.

The first one in this segment is Daiquiri. Yes, Daiquiri is rather famous among the pretty women, isn’t it? The name has a Caribbean (Taino) origin linguistically but it is actually named after a beach near Santiago in Cuba. The main ingredients of a classic Daiquiri are rum, some typical citrus juice (commonly lime juice) and sugar or any other sweetner. It is one of most refreshing drinks in its group but there seems to have had a medicinal reason behind the invention as per the Cuban history suggests!

Obviously there are variants of Daiquiri but here is a simple, classic Daiquiri recipe for you.

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 ounces light rum
3/4 ounce lemon juice
1/4 ounce simple syrup

PREPARATION:  Mix together the rum, lemon juice and sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. (Recipe Courtesy: http://goo.gl/o1kchw)

Simple Bacon Bloody Mary
P.C.: http://goo.gl/cQvlbL

The next is one of the world’s most complex cocktails… Yup, you guessed it right! It is Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary’s existence dates back to the early years of the twentieth century, into the times when personalities like Earnest Hemingway and his contemporaries would visit the bars at length! Bloody Mary is revered to be a ‘Hair of the Dog‘ drink and has numerous variations. It is a popular cocktail that contains Vodka as the main alcohol base and tomato juice. These are the two constant ingredients and the rest that is added is largely variable, from beef consommé to celery, black pepper, lemon juice and what not!

Here is a close adaptation of a Jamie Oliver recipe for a spicy Bloody Mary version. You’ll need: 16 ounces (1/2 quart) of tomato juice, 2 oz vodka, 2 tbsp barbeque sauce, pinch of paprika, salt, juice and pulps of 1/4 lemon, long chopped stalk of celery and a piece of thick-cut cooked bacon. Then, in a cocktail shaker, mix together the tomato juice, vodka, paprika, salt and lemon. Mix well. Fill a bucket or rocks glass, or a stemless snifter with ice. Now pour the mixture and garnish it with a cut of celery and a piece of thick cut, cooked bacon! (You can find the original recipe in: http://goo.gl/nonlzB )

Here are the world’s two of the best cocktails… One is extremely simple and one is quite complex! But you know what? Sometimes, partying out is an easier option! Find out the best pubs, lounges, bars and nightclubs in our BYT website and call 076767 76767 for reservation!

Coffee Story

The importance of ‘Coffee’ dates back to almost the 13th century when, on the Ethiopian landscape of Kaffa, coffee plants flourished in abundance. It was discovered by a shepherd when by eating certain berries of a certain tree, his flock of sheep would not sleep and be very active even through the night. The shepherd informed the Abbot of the local monastery who endeavoured to make a drink with the berries that made him stay awake and alert for long hours!

Gradually the word spread east and by the 15th century, the Arabian kingdoms were introduced to it through one of the greatest ports of the time, Mocha. Within a 100 years more, Egypt, Persia, Syria and Turkey were all in the habit of drinking coffee. Many public houses opened as coffee parlours and this became a trend. These public houses gained importance among the intellectuals and soon were regarded as centres for erudite interactions! The Dutch were proactive in cultivating coffee in the coasts of Malabar, India and some even reached Java, Indonesia.

By the 17th century, coffee reached the realms of Europe with the European explorers and got into the veins of the continent, regardless of the geographical or political boundaries. In Europe, the metropolitans of England, Netherlands, France, Germany and some other countries, already flourished in business and practice of consuming coffee. Many coffee houses were termed as ‘penny university’ because one could buy a cup of coffe for a penny!

The revolt against the increased taxes levied on tea, by King George, with the growing popularity of tea led to the ‘Boston Tea Party’ that marked a milestone in the American history. Coffee reached Latin America when the Brazilian emperor commissioned a visit of a particular official to France, who, although unsuccessful in finding any trade on the same, found enough coffee beans hidden in the bouquet from his lover there, that he could start what is a billion dollar industry in the present day.

Common belief states that Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine came into existence to commemorate the chivalrious act of secretly performing weddings of soldiers who were forbidden to get married, by Saint Valentine of Rome for which he was imprisoned. The lore also tells that before his execution, the Saint wrote a letter to the jailer’s daughter, whom he healed during his prison sentence where he signed “Your Valentine”!! In the Anglican and Lutheran Churches, Valentine’s Day is an official feast day and there are different dates for the celebration of the same among the different schools of Christianity.
